SHEA'S IN SCHOOLS
Outreach Program

About the Program
The goal of the Shea's in Schools Outreach Program is to support educators by providing educational arts programming that supports curriculum and addresses the needs of each individual teacher and his or her students. Shea's Education Program staff will come to your classroom and present a custom designed workshop created specifically to fit your class and students. Workshops are presented either on a one-time or residency basis. All workshops are scheduled in coordination with the school and teaching artist schedules. Workshops may be conducted for a specific Shea's performance, or as a part of your specific curriculum needs. Shea's in Schools workshops support Common Core and New York State Learning Standards. Please contact Jennifer Fitzery, Senior Education Associate, at 716-829-1152, or at jfitzery@sheas.org for more information.

A maximum of 3 workshops can be presented in a day.
A total of no more than 30 minutes may be scheduled between classes (workshops).

BY THE BOOK (2 day residency)
In this residency students will focus on a specific piece of children's literature, study the characters and discover numerous ways to bring those characters to life. By participating in interactive theatre activities involving voice and movement, and by examining the text for clues regarding the thoughts and feelings of the characters, students will become aware of their unique talents and abilities and grow in self-esteem and confidence. Literature will be provided by Shea's Teaching Artist or the program can be presented as a tie-in to a book you are studying in class per teacher and teaching artist agreement. Specific program components vary depending on the grade and age of the students. Past workshops have focused on the books Wonder, Esperanza Rising, Peter Pan and Skippyjon Jones.

Please note some Children's Literature lends itself better for this program than others. Shea's Teaching Artist would be happy to work with you to find the most suitable book or story for your class.
