The Kenny Awards reach over 500 high school students every year and have had over 13,000 students pass through the program since its inception. With so many talented young performers, designers, and technicians out there, you’re bound to run across one (or ten!) of them while attending a performance locally and regionally.
The Historic Palace Theatre in Lockport, NY is currently running Footloose with 10 Kenny alumni in the cast – including three leads! 2016 Kenny leading actress nominee Hannah Keller is starring as Ariel Moore, 2017 Kenny winner and 2018 Kenny nominee Jake Grear is playing Willard Hewitt, and 2017 Kenny finalist Emma Tryon is playing Wendy Jo. Other former Kenny participants include Kasie Buono, Matthew Cullen, Johnny Kiener, Michael Parrizzi, Hannah Schubring, Hunter Steward, and Jeremy Vicario.
You can catch these talented young performers and the rest of the incredible cast at The Palace Theatre in Lockport, NY through July 21. Tickets are $25 for adults, $23 for seniors, and $15 for students.
In June 2019, two Kenny alumni performed in the Lancaster Opera House‘s production of Sister Act. Madelyn Teal, 2018 Kenny participant, and Joe Russi, 2016 Kenny winner, performed as Sister Mary Robert and Pablo. Joe will also be playing A-Rab in MusicalFare Theatre‘s upcoming production of West Side Story in September 2019.
2017 Kenny winner Ian Hayes is currently performing in Matilda the Musical at the Weathervane Playhouse in Newark, OH. And 2018 Kenny participant Joseph Marciniak is just finishing his run in The Tempest with Shakespeare in Delaware Park. This is the last weekend to catch these two performances.
Just to our west in Ohio, another Kenny alum is making her presence known. Two-time Kenny nominee (in 2014 and 2017) Paige Cummings just finished a run in Henry V with The Cleveland Shakespeare Festival and is about to open Heathers the Musical at the Western Reserve Playhouse in Richfield, OH. Heathers runs July 26-August 10, 2019 for anyone wishing to make the trip.
We are so proud of every single one of our program alumni and the impact they are making in the theatre industry here in Buffalo and beyond. We are sure there are others out there that we missed! If you’re a Kenny Awards alum or do you know one who is working on a theatre production, contact Holly Grant at firstname.lastname@example.org with the details and we’ll make sure everyone knows what you’re working on!
