WINGS OF COURAGE
Tuesday, February 8, 2011 10:30am
Grades: 3 - 8
Based on the life of Eugene Bullard, the first African-American combat pilot and adventurer. Bullard was a professional boxer, a World War I flying ace, a jazz musician and a spy. He traveled the world and joined the French Foreign Legion after being denied a meaningful place in the United States Army. He rose through the ranks and flew against the famous “Red Baron” as a part of the famous Lafayette Escadrille during World War I. But when the Escadrille was incorporated into the new U.S. Army Air Corps in 1917, the color of Bullard’s skin prevented him from taking his place alongside the other American heroes of his day. But that didn’t stop him. He went on to fame as a bandleader in Paris in the 1920’s. Using storytelling, music, and drama, Wings of Courage shows how Bullard’s determination and perseverance helped him to overcome discrimination throughout his remarkable life. It is an uplifting tale of vision and hope that deserves to be known by every American. A Mad River Theatre Works production. Supports NYS Learning Standards: The Arts-Theatre 3, Music 3; ELA 1, 2, 3; Social Studies-1, 2, 5. Character Development.

RUNT OF THE LITTER
Tuesday, March 8, 2011 10:30am
Grades: 4 - 8
Bo Eason’s powerful solo play Runt of the Litter tells a compelling story of family dynamics and success against great odds. Initially told he was too small to play football, Eason stuck to his 20 year plan and his determination and effort led to a successful collegiate and professional career as safety with the NFL’s Houston Oilers. Runt of the Litter is a semi-autobiographical account of Bo Eason’s career as a safety for the Houston Oilers in the 1980’s. His determination and instincts on the playing field remain the stuff of legend. This one man show performed by Eason himself demonstrates that with perseverance, hard work and strength of character one can achieve one’s goals and fulfill one’s dreams. Supports NYS Learning Standards: The Arts-Theatre 3; ELA 1, 2; Health, Physical Education, and family and Consumer Sciences 1. Character Development.
